The painting “The Tortoise Trainer”, of Osman Hamdi Bey was interpreted as describing the weary state of an intellectual who tried to modernize a backward society, especially when there was no clear inspiration. Osman Hamdi Bey satirizes himself in the painting by showing himself as a tamer, and his subordinates, who cannot adapt to his own way of doing business, as turtles trying to reach the food. Yvette Mizrahi was inspired by this painting and designed a collection called “The Tortoises of Osman”.
